What is a metropolitan statistical area?

A metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is a region defined by the federal Office of Management and Budget around a core urban area of at least 50,000 people, plus the surrounding counties that have strong commuting ties to it. Because MSAs are built from whole counties and reflect where people live and work, they are the standard geography for comparing regional labor markets, housing costs and wages across the country.

econHQ calculates the metro unemployment rate by adding up employment and labor force across the metro’s Georgia counties and dividing — the same building-block approach BLS uses for its own area estimates. Because this metro area extends into a neighboring state, the figures here cover only its Georgia counties and will differ from BLS’s published figure for the full metro area.
